The Ring Binder
the classic, the traitor
Ring binders are the most common product on the market for binding loose-leaf pages. At school or in the office, they make binding three-hole-punched pages a snap.
Many collectors trust them to safely store their trading cards in loose-leaf pocket pages, but one wrong page turn or careless flip can cause permanent damage. Even if you are careful with the pages yourself, all bets are off once you hand your binder over to share your collection with someone else.
The Permanent-Page Portfolio
ringless, simplistic, inflexible
The ring dent problem eventually gave rise to the trading card “portfolio”, a book with permanently-attached card pocket pages. The sewn or welded pages are directly connected to the book spine, removing the risk of mechanical damage from the binding.
Annoyingly, this completely sacrifices the freedom to add, remove, or recombine pages. Once the portfolio fills up, the only way to add a card is to move everything to a bigger binder or move a portion of the cards to a different binder. Either way, each card you relocate will need to be removed from the first binder one at a time.

ANTICIPATED LAUNCH SCHEDULE
Test DFM prototype
COMPLETED - SEPTEMBER 2026
Find all the imperfections and “hammer out the kinks” so to speak.
Do the parts work together correctly? Are they too fragile or rigid? What challenges did the prototyping shop have that need to be addressed?
Post-in-tube 3-hole assembly is difficult to align and close (too much friction). Changing to five interleaving posts. Side plates can rotate even when latches closed, risking accidental opening. Added slide latch to make this impossible while still keeping it easy to open.
3D-printed prototype
COMPLETED - MARCH 2026
Produce physical prototype using 3D printing. This will validate that the device works as intended in its current geometry. Also allows for discovering defects and possible problems to fix in future models.
Optimize model for manufacturing (DFM)
COMPLETED - MAY 2026
After deciding on materials to use, follow Design For Manufacturing (DFM) principles to update the geometry of each part to make sure that it can be reasonably manufactured using conventional manufacturing methods.
Have DFM model fabricated
COMPLETED - AUGUST 2026
Validate the DFM design by having a physical model made by a prototyping shop.
Parts received.
Find manufacturing parters
COMPLETED EARLY - JULY 2026
Reach out to multiple manufacturers and obtain a quote and feedback on manufacturability.
I have already received multiple quotes for each required part and connected with a manufacturing agent to coordinate the quality, assembly, warehousing, and shipping processes.
Fabricate and test updates
COMPLETED - October 2026
Validate the updates with a physical assembly.
The new version works much better than before! From initial tests:
- Individual posts can withstand at least 20lbs of lateral force without deforming
- Individual binding plates can withstand at least 20lbs of bending force without deforming
- Binding can withstand at least 20lbs of opening force without accidental opening
- Binding plates can withstand at least 20lbs of force without separating
Launch Kickstarter campaign
January 2027
Studies show that Kickstarter campaigns perform more poorly toward the end of the year, especially in December. I’ve been advised to launch in Q1 2027 to take advantage of the statistically better performance the beginning of the year is shown to have.

I’m hoping (and expecting) that it won’t take this long to deliver after funding, but I am giving plenty of time in case we need to make changes to parts or manufacturers along the way.
